Arsenal played Paris St-Germain three times in last season’s Champions League.

They claimed a notable 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium in the league phase, thanks to first-half goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.

But the French champions slowly evolved over the season and, after scraping through the league phase, grew into a formidable outfit en route to their 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the final – beating Liverpool and Aston Villa before edging past the Gunners in the last four.

Luis Enrique’s side claimed a 3-1 victory over Arsenal on aggregate, winning the away leg thanks to an Ousmane Dembele goal after just four minutes, before sealing their place in the final with a hard-fought 2-1 win in Paris.

They did not have it all their own way, however. Giant Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, now at Manchester City, saved brilliantly from Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard either side of the break at Emirates Stadium, while Mikel Merino’s header was ruled out for offside.

And Donnarumma was at it again in the second leg, producing outstanding saves from Martinelli and Martin Odegaard’s as PSG were rocked back in the opening stages, then denying Bukayo Saka after Fabian Ruiz had put the home side ahead on the night with a deflected finish.

PSG finally put the tie to bed 20 minutes from time with a goal from Achraf Hakimi after Gunners goalkeeper David Raya had saved a penalty from Vitinha.

Saka did finally beat Donnarumma with an angled finish 14 minutes from time, but the damage had already been done.
