Last week, Pakistan prepared its capital city Islamabad for potential peace talks between Iran and the US

Today’s questioning comes with the US and Iran in a state of open-ended ceasefire.

On 7 April, Trump warned a “whole civilisation will die tonight” unless Iranian leaders agreed to peace talk conditions, with a breakthrough confirmed a few hours before the threatened attack on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

On 21 April, Trump said he would extend an initial two-week ceasefire “until such time as [Iran’s] proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or another”.

Without a deadline, the future course of the war is uncertain.

Diplomatic talks mediated by Pakistan have continued behind the scenes – though negotiations in Islamabad last week which were set to involve Trump’s closest envoys, Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, were pulled at the last minute.

The White House says it will resume strikes if Iran does not sign a comprehensive deal eventually – and writing on social media today, Trump warned Tehran to “get smart”, posting what appears to be an AI image of himself holding a rifle.
